The boost given by the 2012 London Olympics to participation rates in sport is being felt here in Cambridge with bumper registrations for this years Chariots of Fire charity relay race.
Race organisers have reported an encouraging number of team registrations but are keen to stress that with one month to go there are still spaces available.
Charles Hewitson, race director and partner at Hewitsons, said: “We are delighted that the people of Cambridgeshire are continuing to show their support for Chariots by taking part and raising sponsorship for Papworth Trust. Every year I am struck by the sight of thousands of fundraisers running through the city for charity, and I’m certain this year will be no exception.”
However, unlike in the Olympics, where a few runners were issued with either a gold, silver or bronze medal each Chariots runner will receive a complimentary medal as a memento for completing the race. In addition there are also a wide variety of prizes on offer with different categories aligned to Trophy titles all up for grabs. A popular trophy title which teams increasingly aspire to win is the ‘People’s Cup’.
This is awarded to the team that provides the most laughter and entertainment for the crowds on the day – usually achieved by running in fancy dress or involving props or gimmicks! Last years winners ‘Smurfs 10,’ a John Lewis team, entertained the crowds by completing the course dressed as, as the name suggests, Smurfs.
If like many others you would like to be part of the region’s longest running charitable relay race, why not register a team today? Registration closes on Monday 16th September Chariots of Fire takes place on Sunday 22 September, starting from Queens’ Green with teams of six each running the scenic 1.7 mile course in relay format through the city centre and Kings, Clare and Trinity colleges.
