Chariots of Fire 2008 was a great success with a record 409 teams entering the race to raise money for Romsey Mill and Red Balloon - Cambridge.
With preparations starting for next year’s event, charities can now apply to be the recipient charity for the 2009 event, which will take place on Sunday 20 September. For further details on how to apply and to download a Charity Application Form, visit the charities page on the event website. The closing date for charities to apply is Monday 26th January and a decision will be made in early February.
Each year, different types of charities are chosen to receive the funds raised from the event and over the years over £600,000 has been raised for a wide variety of organisations including the Sue Ryder Foundation, Barnardo’s, The Papworth Trust for disabled people, Arthur Rank Hospice, the East Anglian Air Ambulance and for various clinics and appeals at Addenbrookes Hospital. The charity relay race is based on the famous film “Chariots of Fire” and is organised by Hewitsons, Grant Thornton UK LLP and backed by Media Partners, The Cambridge News.
Charles Hewitson, Race Director and Senior Partner at Hewitsons said, “Over the years we have chosen quite a variety of different charities and we would encourage charities of all types and sizes to apply for next year’s event.” Mike Hughes, Partner at Grant Thornton UK LLP added, “Each year, we like to try and raise the bar and aim to raise more and more money for these worthy causes the event supports. This year we are hoping to beat the 2007 sponsorship total of £75,000.”
The 2008 event was held in support of two local charities for disadvantaged young people, families and badly bullied children. Sponsorship monies are still being collected and runners from the 2008 teams should send in any remaining sponsorship as soon as possible.
