On Tuesday 20th January 2015 Hewitsons Charitable Trust hosted the 2014 Chariots of Fire cheque presentation. In total £70,000 was raised thanks to all the efforts of over 2,100 runners.
The presentation was attended by Dr Lynn Morgan (Chief Executive) and other representatives from the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, the race President Sir Michael Marshall, the Cambridge Mayor Cllr Gerri Bird, and Paul Brackley editor of the Cambridge News. In total £70,000 was raised thanks to all the efforts of over 2,100 runners from the 361 teams that took part in the race last September - much to the delight of the surprised charity. According to Dr Lynn Morgan the amount raised “surpassed all expectations.”
All proceeds from the 2014 race will support Arthur Rank which is raising money to build a new state-of-the art hospice on the outskirts of the city. Funds from Chariots will specifically go towards funding two four bed inpatient bays in the new hospice.
The cheque was received by Dr Lynn Morgan who said “We are absolutely thrilled to receive such a large donation as a result of the 2014 Chariots of Fire Relay Race. This race is known as a wonderful fundraiser, a fabulous team building occasion and a nostalgic Cambridge calendar date. We are so very grateful to have played a part in its history and we are delighted the event will now play a part in our history in helping us secure funds for our new hospice. We would like to thank everyone who supported the event and we would like to extend our appreciation to the Hewitsons Charitable Trust team who were an absolute pleasure to work alongside.”
The presentation was also attended by Dame Mary Archer, as representative of the team that raised the highest sponsorship amount, ‘The Great Dames’, with an impressive £6400. This year’s race will be held on Sunday 20th September 2015 and will be officially launched in May 2015 with further details provided in due course.
