On Wednesday 22nd January 2014 Hewitsons Charitable Trust hosted the 2013 Chariots of Fire cheque presentation.
Representatives from the charity; Papworth Trust were in attendance and the Cambridge Mayor, Cllr Paul Saunders. In total £40,000 was raised thanks to the efforts of over 2,100 runners from the 356 teams that took part in September last year.
Proceeds from the 2013 race will support Papworth Trust in making vital improvements to their Cambridge Centre, in Hawthorn Way. These include a new design and printing service to support the local community as well as renovations to the building creating a more comfortable environment where all their service users can be inspired to learn new skills and make new friends.
The proceeds will also go towards improvements to the centres hall so that other charities and organisations in the local community can use it. The cheque was presented by the Honorary President of the Chariots of Fire charity relay race, Sir Michael Marshall, Charles Hewitson, senior partner at Hewitsons and race director and Chris Elliott, senior reporter of the News. The cheque was received by Annette Angell, Fundraising Manager from Papworth Trust and Joanne Womack, a trustee of the Papworth Trust.
Annette Angell, Fundraising Manager said “We really do appreciate everyone who took part in Chariots this year and raised sponsorship. Every penny we receive will be spent on our efforts to improve our Cambridge Centre.”
Charles Hewitson, who ran for the 22nd consecutive yearsaid: “It is always enjoyable to participate in the event and to see all the support. This support is crucial to the continued success of the event and for that I thank all of those who participated and helped raise funds, especially this year’s highest fund raising team from Cambridge University Faculty of Education.”
