Romsey Mill

Many people enjoy the benefits of Cambridge as a city with a positive reputation for culture, education and innovation. However, it contains some areas of significant deprivation (e.g. in the north and east of the city), which often go unnoticed.
Romsey Mill works with some of the most disadvantaged young people and families in Cambridgeshire, creating and/or making accessible the opportunities they need to flourish. People are accepted, listened to, encouraged and challenged. Poverty, unemployment, isolation and social exclusion are being overcome by developing confidence, skills and aspirations.
The charity helps people to develop all aspects of their person (physical, mental, social, spiritual…) through a pioneering range of activities. Programmes are based on participation, and on building long-term relationships – not primarily on targets or on standardised models.
Transitions Programme…
…helps vulnerable 10-14 year-olds to increase their self-esteem, confidence, aspirations and skills, including specific help to make a successful transition from primary to secondary school.
Aspire Programme…
…develops social, communication and life skills with young people with Asperger syndrome or similar autistic spectrum conditions. It helps them to integrate better into education and society, and supports their families.
Young Parents Programme…
…works with teenage parents to reduce isolation and to improve health, education and future prospects for themselves and for their children.
Social Inclusion Programme…
…supports young people experiencing a wide range of disadvantages (e.g. turbulent family situations, difficulties gaining qualifications and/or employment, lack of positive role models). It helps to reduce negative activity (e.g. involvement in bullying, substance abuse, crime, antisocial behaviour), to improve skills and confidence, to raise aspirations and to fulfil potential.
Sure Start Children’s Centre and Under 5s Programme…
…provides information, advice, and support to parents of children under 5 in east Cambridge. It promotes well-being, healthy living and effective parenting. It encourages children’s development and education in their early years.
Romsey Mill supports young people and families through group work, 1:1 support, courses, work in schools, detached work, activity-based groups (e.g. sports, urban music, dance), home visits and residentials.
